Bodi ya Wakurugenzi wa Mamlaka ya Udhibiti wa Huduma za Nishati na Maji (EWURA), katika kikao chake cha tarehe 10 Desemba 2013 pamoja na mambo mengine, ilitoa maamuzi ya ongezeko la bei za umeme kwa viwango mbalimbali kwa makundi mbalimbali ya wateja hatua ambayo itaongeza mzigo wa gharama za maisha kwa wananchi na itaathiri uchumi wa nchi. Maamuzi hayo yamefikiwa kufuatia tarehe 11 Oktoba 2013, Shirika la Umeme Tanzania (TANESCO) kuwasilisha maombi ya kurekebisha bei ya umeme kwa EWURA. TANESCO ilipendekeza kuongeza bei kwa asilimia 67.87 kuanzia tarehe 1 Oktoba 2013, asilimia 12.74 kuanzia tarehe 1 Januari 2014 na asilimia 9.17 kuanzia tarehe 1 Januari 2015. Vilevile TANESCO waliomba kuidhinishwa kwa kanuni ya kurekebisha bei ya umeme kulingana na mabadiliko ya bei za mafuta, mfumuko wa bei na mabadiliko ya thamani ya shilingi ya kitanzania.
