President Jakaya Kikwete is expected to hold a meeting with political parties council members on February 6, this year at Mwalimu Nyerere International Convention Centre in Dar es Salaam.
According to official statement issued in Dar es Salaam on Friday and signed by the Registrar of Political Parties, Judge Francis Mutungi, the main agenda to the meeting will be “The Role of Political Parties in the Constitutional Assembly.”
He said the session offers the opportunity to all council members drawn from different political parties to reflect on the need to focus on issues of national interests, instead of thinking about individual party interests.
Delegates to the meeting, (council of political parties) who by virtue of their positions are national leaders of the registered political parties with members in Zanzibar and the Mainland, will deliberate on important aspects for discussion during the constitutional Assembly, slated to begin in Dodoma shortly.
Among other duties of the council is to advise the government and the Registrar of Political Parties on different issues related to democracy and political affairs in the country.
Towards the end of last year, the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC) under the chairmanship of former Prime Minister Joseph Warioba handed-over to President Kikwete the second draft of the constitution, the document which will be taken for discussion in the constitutional assembly before being tabled to the general public for national referendum.
